BTech Sustainable Water and Sanitation Management
Overview
Ghana has made tremendous strides toward providing basic water and sanitation services nationwide (Herald, 2022).
According to WHO/UNICEF Global WASH Monitoring Report, 1 in 4 people – 2 billion people – around the world lack safely managed drinking water and around 1.8 million people lack proper toilets and sanitation facilities (UN, 2023).
BTech in Sustainable Water and Sanitation Management programme facilitates the attainment of national strategies and sustainable development goals.
The programme would further equip graduates with rudimentary knowledge and expertise in the water and sanitation industry's policy planning, governance, analysis, monitoring, and evaluation. Similarly, the water sector requires the development and implementation of policies clarifying the roles and authorities of the central government, local authorities, formal private sector actors, and formal/informal small water enterprises. Graduates of the programme will support the revision and implementation of WASH policies, including carrying out routine audit services towards more transparent and accountable service.
Also, skills and expertise in water and sanitation will help local authorities to improve WASH service delivery, including piloting new management models, such as delegated management contracts, aggregated community-based management, or private operator models.
The programme will contribute to social and behaviour change approaches, particularly the community-led total sanitation approach, to sustain and reinforce basic hygiene practices while expanding access to improved WASH services. Quality water services (i.e., accessible public taps and reliable infrastructure) and innovative social and behaviour change approaches will save time for families, enabling and encouraging the consistent adoption of hygiene practices.
Entry Requirements
Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) Candidates
The applicants must have Credit Passes (A–D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects (including English Language, Mathematics (core), Integrated Science) plus three (3) relevant elective subjects such as Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Technical Drawing, Plumbing, Building Construction, Economics, Agricultural Science, ICT
West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates
The applicants must have Credit Passes (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects (ie English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science) plus three (3) relevant elective subjects such as Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Technical Drawing, Plumbing, Building Construction, Economics, Agricultural Science, ICT
General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level
Passes in three subjects (at least one of the passes should be grade D or better. Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Art subject for science students.
Applicants from Technical Institutes
Applicants from Technical Institutes with Passes in the Relevant Elective Courses without Mathematics, English Language and Integrated Science may be admitted to an intensive two (2) month bridging (pre-degree) programme before formal admission to the programme after passing a selection examination.
Mature Applicants
Mature students have also been provided with the opportunity to further their education in this programme. They must
- be at least 25 years old,
- show proof of age with a birth certificate, baptismal certificate or any legitimate documentary proof of date of birth.
- Pass Mature Students' Entrance Examinations conducted by the University. In line with the above, the applicant must show proof of passes in English and Mathematics in WASSCE or any other nationally recognised standard High School level examination (for qualifications from countries outside WAEC’s jurisdiction).
Foreign qualifications
All foreign qualifications will be referred to the GTEC for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission into the programme in line with the NAB Act, 2007 [Act 774 (2(2b)]
